Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the three signs around your natal Moon: the sign before the Moon's, the Moon's sign and the one after. Since Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, the period lasts close to seven and a half years. Its reputation as a period of bad luck is old, and K. S. Krishnamurti himself, the creator of the KP method, wrote that this reading is incorrect.
Where the name comes from
Sade Sati means "seven and a half". The count uses the natal Moon as its reference, because the Moon is the starting point of many readings in Vedic astrology. The tradition has observed this transit for generations and associates it with responsibility, effort and maturing.
The geometry is simple. If your Moon is in Taurus, Sade Sati begins when Saturn enters Aries, passes through Taurus and ends when it leaves Gemini. The dates of each stage change with Saturn's retrogrades, so the three parts rarely have the same length.
Many astrologers use Sade Sati as a marker of a phase in life, and that is a legitimate reading within the tradition. What KP astrology adds is the next question: what does Saturn represent in your chart?
What Krishnamurti wrote about Sade Sati
KSK devoted two chapters of KP Reader V, his book on transits, to the topic. The titles already state his position: one talks about the satisfactory gains of Sade Sati and the other about the truth about it (K. S. Krishnamurti, KP Reader V, table of contents).
On p. 247, he observes that during Saturn's seven and a half years most people have great success. On p. 261, he calls incorrect the claim that this period brings misfortune and points out how many people get married precisely during it. For KSK, attributing a loss only to Saturn's passage over the Moon ignores what the chart shows.
This is one of the clearest positions of the method. Instead of a label for seven years of your life, KP looks at each matter separately.
How KP reads this period
In KP, the significator is what delivers a result. Each planet signifies certain houses in your chart, and each house covers a matter: work, marriage, home, money. In your chart, Saturn may be a significator of houses that favor a new job. In that case, a period linked to it tends to bring that job, with or without Sade Sati.
The timing of the event comes from the personal periods. Vimshottari divides life into phases called dasha (major period) and bhukti (sub-period). The event happens when the rulers of these periods signify the matter, and the transit confirms the date (K. S. Krishnamurti, KP Reader VI, p. 186). The guide to house significators shows this calculation step by step.
Three "Saturn phases" that are different calculations
| Term | What is measured |
|---|---|
| Sade Sati | Saturn crossing the three signs around the natal Moon |
| Saturn return | Saturn coming back to the degree it was in at your birth |
| Saturn Mahadasha | Saturn's major period in Vimshottari, lasting 19 years |
You can be in one of these periods without being in the others. When someone says "you are in your Saturn phase", it is worth asking which of the three calculations they mean. The Saturn return has a guide of its own.
What Vedik shows
Vedik does not calculate Sade Sati. The engine follows KP, with Krishnamurti's own ayanamsa and the position of the planets calculated with the Swiss ephemeris. What your reading shows are your planetary cycles: the major phase (mahadasha) and the sub-period (bhukti) you are in right now.
If your active phase is Saturn's, the Saturn phase page explains what the method associates with those 19 years. The phases page brings together the nine phases of the cycle. And when your question is about a concrete matter, you can ask VedikAI, which answers the "when" as a month and year.
If someone told you that you are in Sade Sati
You do not need to put your plans on hold. A few questions help give shape to what you heard:
- Which matter is the reading talking about: work, relationship, home, money?
- What personal period are you in now, and what does it mean for that matter?
- Did the reading point to a stretch of months or only name the transit?
A long transit describes the sky of many people at the same time. Your chart and your periods say what that sky means for you. No method delivers certainty about life, and the last word is always yours.
