A zodiac aligned with the stars
Western astrology, the one behind most horoscopes, uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the fixed stars.
Because the sky shifts slowly over the centuries, the two zodiacs are now about 24 degrees apart. They measure the sky in different ways, and the Vedic calculation follows the stars.
Four building blocks
A Vedic reading combines four elements:
- Planets
- Each one represents a force in life, such as communication, love, discipline or growth.
- Signs
- The background that shapes how each planet expresses itself.
- Houses
- The areas of life, such as work, relationships, money, family and health. Each house covers one theme.
- Periods (dashas)
- The cycles of time. This is the defining feature of the Indian tradition.
The first three describe the chart. The periods set the chart in motion over time.
What sets it apart: periods of time
Most astrology answers "what are you like?". Vedic astrology also answers "what is active right now?".
Dashas are periods, from months to years, in which a different planet leads your life. This is why one phase is about intense work, another about a change in relationships, and another about slowing down.
This map of time is what makes it possible to talk about timing: when a phase supports acting and when it asks for patience. That is where the link between Vedic astrology and decisions comes from.
Your Vedic chart
Your chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact minute and place you were born. It shows where each planet was, which areas of life are in focus through the houses, and where you are in your periods of time.
That is why it is unique. Two people born on the same day at different times have different charts.
