Vedic astrology and Western astrology: what is the difference?
Vedic astrology and Western astrology observe the same sky. Both use the Sun, the Moon and the planets, and both start from the date, time and place where the person was born.
The difference that matters most lies in the question each one usually answers. Western astrology, as it is practiced day to day, gives more weight to personality: who you are and what drives you. Vedic astrology also describes the person, but devotes a good part of its method to time: which phase of life you are in and when each matter tends to happen.
What is Western astrology
Western astrology is the best-known system in Brazil. It has roots in the Babylonian, Egyptian and Greek traditions, and it is where horoscopes and the question "what's your sign?" come from.
In it, the sun sign usually takes center stage in the reading.
What is Vedic astrology
Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish, was born in India.
In a Vedic reading, the sun sign shares space with other points in the chart:
- the ascendant (Lagna)
- the Moon sign
- the position of each planet in the houses
Beyond these, Vedic astrology works with Rahu and Ketu, the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path in the sky. And there is a central element in the method: the cycles of time.
The cycles of time
The most widely used cycle system in Vedic astrology is Vimshottari. It divides life into periods ruled by the planets, which add up to 120 years. Each period has sub-periods, and each sub-period is divided into smaller parts.
Knowing which period you are in changes the reading. The same decision can find favorable ground in one phase and call for waiting in another.
Where KP comes in
Within the Vedic tradition, KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) was created by Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti in the mid-20th century and is about 70 years old. It is a predictive method, with a logic different from Western astrology: it looks at the sky in finer divisions, reaching subdivisions within each constellation, to answer when things tend to happen.
The zodiac reference
Each system uses its own reference to mark the start of the zodiac. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons of the year. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned with the fixed stars.
Each system is consistent with its own reference, and a chart is always read by the rules of the system in which it was calculated.
Which system is better?
Both have their own method and tradition, and many people study both. The choice depends on the question you want to answer.
To understand which phase you are in and when a matter tends to happen, the Vedic method, and KP within it, was developed for exactly that.
How Vedik uses Vedic astrology
Vedik is the first platform in Brazil with KP calculations. From your date, time and city of birth, our own engine calculates your chart using the KP method and shows the phase you are living and what it promises, with the window of months for each matter.
The AI does not calculate. It interprets the engine's results. And the last word is always yours.
