Synastry is the reading of two charts together to understand the relationship between two people. In Vedic astrology it answers two questions: how you work together and when the relationship finds an open path. The first is about affinity. The second is about timing, and that is where the KP method has the most to say.
Two people can recognize each other at the first meeting and want different lives. Affinity and timing move at their own pace. A good reading separates the two.
Four questions inside "are we a match?"
The question seems like one. When you open it up, it reveals four topics:
| Question | What you want to understand |
|---|---|
| Do we have affinity? | How you come together and where friction appears |
| Do we want the same relationship? | What each person expects from commitment and living together |
| Is it the right time? | Whether each person's phase makes room for the relationship now |
| Can we build together? | How agreements work day to day |
The chart reading speaks well to the first two rows on the affinity side and to the third on the timing side. The fourth you answer by living it.
How the Vedic tradition compares two charts
The best-known traditional system is Ashtakoota. It compares eight factors tied to each person's Moon and adds up to 36 points. It is an established approach, used for generations in India to assess a couple's affinity before marriage.
Read the score for what it tells you. "28 out of 36" says how many of the rule's factors matched. It does not convert into a percentage chance that the couple will stay together. Before looking at the number, see which factors went into the count and which weighed more.
What KP adds: timing
KP (Krishnamurti Paddhati) is the method created by the Indian astrologer K. S. Krishnamurti. It reads each topic through houses and significators. A significator is the planet that, by its position and the star it sits in, connects to a house of the chart.
For commitment, the method examines houses 2, 7 and 11. The 2nd is family, the 7th is contract and partnership, the 11th is lasting friendship (K. S. Krishnamurti, KP Reader III, p. 300).
Then time comes in. In KP, the event happens in the period when the planets tied to the topic are active together: the dasha (major period), the bhukti (sub-period) and the antara (sub-sub-period), with the transit confirming (K. S. Krishnamurti, KP Reader VI, p. 186). That is why a KP relationship reading says when the path opens, in addition to how you fit together.
Affinity and timing complement each other
The affinity reading describes the fit. The period reading shows when the topic is active. Together, they help you understand the phase the relationship is going through.
A phase open to commitment in your chart coexists with what the other person says. If they say they don't want commitment right now, that statement counts as the main information. The chart shows your moment. Their answer comes from them.
The reverse also holds. A phase that calls for care is an invitation to plan a relationship that is going well with more attention.
What a reading of the other person's chart can reach
When you include another person's chart, the reading shows the dynamic between the two of you: where the relationship opens a path and what calls for attention. It stays in that territory. What the other person feels, thinks or wants, you find out by talking with them.
How to bring the reading into the conversation
Turn what the reading shows into concrete questions. If it points to different rhythms, talk about how often you're in touch, each person's space and plans for next year. If it speaks of commitment, ask what each of you means by that word.
The reading helps when it opens the conversation. It gets in the way when it becomes an argument to end a discussion, along the lines of "you're like this because the chart says so". Use what it shows as a starting point. The last word is always yours.
Relationships of every kind
The reading applies to any couple, of any orientation and in any kind of bond. The classic books use terms like "husband" and "wife" because they were written in another era. The houses describe commitment, and the reading adapts to the commitment you want to build.
Romantic Combination at Vedik
Romantic Combination reads your relationship from both charts: where it opens a path and what calls for attention. For each topic, it says whether each person's chart shows a path or shows no path, from both sides.
It costs 10 credits. The Insight and Master plans already include matches every month, and the details are on the plans page.
