To know which dasha you are in, you need to calculate the sequence of periods from your birth. The starting point is the lunar star the Moon was in: the planet that rules that star opens the sequence, and the part of the star the Moon still had to cover defines how much of that first period was left (KP Reader I, p.104 and p.109). From there, the periods always follow the same order.
The order and length of the periods
In the Vimshottari cycle, the nine periods add up to 120 years:
| Order | Planet | Length |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 years |
| 2 | Venus | 20 years |
| 3 | Sun | 6 years |
| 4 | Moon | 10 years |
| 5 | Mars | 7 years |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 years |
| 7 | Jupiter | 16 years |
| 8 | Saturn | 19 years |
| 9 | Mercury | 17 years |
After Mercury, the sequence goes back to Ketu.
Cycle and phase: the two levels
Each major period, the Mahadasha, is divided into nine smaller phases, the Bhuktis, in the same order and the same proportion. That is why you are always on two levels at once: a major cycle, which lasts years, and a phase within it, which lasts months. An example: in the Jupiter cycle, the Saturn phase.
See how the phases are divided in Bhukti and Antardasha and do the math step by step in how to calculate the Vimshottari.
Why the birth time matters
The Moon moves about one degree every two hours. A wrong time rarely changes the planet of the cycle, but it can change the date each phase begins. If you do not know the exact time, read where to look for your birth time. If two tools show different dates, see what to check.
Where to see yours at Vedik
In Vedik's reading, your moment appears right at the start:
- Active phase: the phase you are in now, how long ago it began and how many months are left.
- Next phase: which one comes next and when it begins.
- Major cycles: the list of your major periods, with the start and end year of each one.
Each phase has a name, such as "Expansion and opportunities" for Jupiter. Each phase's name is Vedik's. What it brings to each subject comes from your chart. See what each period brings.
