An empty house is a house with no planet in it. The house's topic stays active in your life. In KP, a house with no occupant works through its owner and through the planets that sit in that owner's star.
Every chart has empty houses
Vedic astrology works with nine planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and the nodes Rahu and Ketu. That is nine bodies for twelve houses. By the math, every chart has at least three empty houses, and most have more, because planets tend to cluster in the same house.
Empty houses are a normal part of the layout. What decides a house's strength is who is connected to it, and KP has a precise way to measure that.
The order of strength of significators
A significator is the planet that answers for the topic of a house. K. S. Krishnamurti arranged the significators in an order, from strongest to weakest (KP Reader VI, p. 276):
- Planet in the star of an occupant of the house.
- Planet occupying the house.
- Planet in the star of the house's owner.
- The owner of the house, the planet that rules the sign of the cusp.
In Reader III he adds two more levels: planets conjunct the significators and those that receive aspects from them (KP Reader III, p. 341). The star, here, is the nakshatra, one of the 27 divisions of the zodiac, each with a ruling planet.
The order shows something important: for KP, the occupant weighs more than the owner. In his words, the tenant is stronger than the landlord (KP Reader VI, p. 237).
How an empty house works
In an empty house, the first two levels have no one. The reading moves down to the third and fourth: the planets in the owner's star and the owner itself.
| Level | Occupied house | Empty house |
|---|---|---|
| 1. In the occupant's star | Exists | Does not exist |
| 2. Occupant | Exists | Does not exist |
| 3. In the owner's star | Exists | Exists |
| 4. Owner | Exists | Exists |
Here is a hypothetical example. The 7th house, of partnerships, is empty, and its cusp falls in Taurus. The owner is Venus. Venus rules three nakshatras: Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha. If the Moon is in Purva Phalguni, the Moon becomes a significator of the 7th house at the third level. Venus comes in at the fourth.
For marriage, KP looks at houses 2, 7 and 11 together: family, contract and lasting friendship (KP Reader III, p. 300). When the dasha, bhukti and antara of planets tied to these houses coincide, and the transit confirms, the topic moves (KP Reader VI, p. 186). In this example, a period of the Moon or of Venus can open the topic of marriage, even with the 7th house empty.
If no planet is in the owner's star, the house speaks only through the owner. It stays connected to your life, with fewer channels.
The nodes also enter this count. Rahu and Ketu act as agents: they give first the result of the planet they are conjunct with, then that of the ruler of the star they are in, then that of whoever aspects them and finally that of the owner of the sign (KP Reader VI, p. 276). If Rahu is with Venus, it can represent Venus in the reading of the empty 7th house.
Three readings an empty house does not support
"My 7th house is empty, so I won't get married." Marriage in KP goes through 2, 7 and 11 and through the significators of each. An empty 7th house removes two levels from one of the three houses.
"My 10th house is empty, so I have no career." Employment in KP is read through houses 2, 6 and 10 together (KP Reader VI, p. 275). An empty 10th house keeps answering through its owner and the planets in the owner's star.
"A full house is better." A house with several occupants has more significators, and each of them is also connected to other houses. More planets bring more threads to read.
What to ask instead of "is this bad?"
Ask who the significators of the topic are and when their periods are active. That question leads to the phase of your life when the topic has strength. This is how KP turns an empty house into useful information.
In your free Vedik reading, the "House map" and the "Where your planets are" section show which house and which star each planet fell in. To find out when a topic moves, you can ask VedikAI, and each question costs 1 credit. To get started, create your free reading.
